Fatima Hospital : An Outlook

Fatima hospital, the health care unit of the Catholic Diocese of Gorakhpur came into being in the year 1995 with a view to reaching health care services to the unreached and marginalized community. It had its humble beginning in 1995 with 20 beds in the provision for the general medical facilities. Fatima Hospital is located in Padri Bazar, Gorakhpur the Eastern Region of Uttar Pradesh. We aim to give "holistic care" ministering to the different dimension of a person's needs by providing physical, spiritual, emotional and psychological care. In recognition of the "wholeness" of the person, the Hospital's motto “Life in its fullness” aptly sums up the manner in which it carries out its ministry of care.

The hospital is a 200 bedded with  various specialties  like General Medicine, Cardiology, General Surgery, Gynecology & Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Cardio-Thoracic, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dental, Casualty, Radiology & Imaging, Pharmacy, NICU, ICU, MICU, Dialysis, Trauma Ambulance equipped with ventilators, monitor and life savings equipment, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Hematology, Histopathology, Clinical Pathology, Community health and Department of Blood Transfusion with all the diagnostic facilities. At present, it is one of the leading hospitals of Gorakhpur with 30 doctors, 36 Para-Medical staffs and 69 nursing professionals working round the clock providing quality medical care to the marginalized section of the society in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

In the march towards bringing good health care facilities for the people, many have joined hands with Fatima Hospital like: MISEREOR, CNEWA, MANOS UNIDAS, CBM, Italian Bishop’s Conference (CEI), LACIM and SIMAVI.

Fatima Eye Service

Screening camp

A Fatima Eye service has its humble beginning from the inception of the hospital with 1 visiting Ophthalmologist and a staff nurse in 1995. Though it was started with limited facilities, in the course of time the eye department gradually grew and could serve the people of Eastern Uttar Pradesh in providing eye care services and contribute to the alleviation of the avoidable blindness of the region. Working towards the vision of WHO, “Right to sight,” “vision 2020,” Fatima Hospital has joined hands with CBM, Germany from 2005 onwards to bring complete eyesight to the people with its Community Ophthalmology department and to identify the maximum number of avoidable blindness cases in the focus area. With the generous support of CBM, Germany, hospital has opened a full-fledged Ophthalmology department with all the basic machines with two ophthalmologists on the roll. The community ophthalmology team goes to the villages on regular intervals to give awareness to the people on health issues like Sanitation, Hygiene, Safe drinking Water/ Potable Water. The team screens the people for cataract surgery. Fatima Hospital organizes general Orthopedics camps in the villages for awareness in the local community. Recently, Senior Citizens Association Welfare has joined hands with us for free cataract surgeries of the poor people aged above 50.

Fatima hospital is recognized both by the government and the community for its community ophthalmology work such as community eye and school screening camps. They currently offer small incision and manual Phaco cataract surgery, management of ocular trauma, glaucoma surgery, diagnostic and treatment of corneal diseases. Between 2013 and 2015 the hospital has been part of the CBM supported cluster eye care project for Northern India (P2030) which supported the development of sub-specialties in the areas of pediatric ophthalmology as well as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy (specific screening camps, equipment, and training of eye care personnel). Currently, there are one full-time and one part-time ophthalmologist at the hospital. The hospital provides training courses for paramedical staff (nursing courses in the field of eye work and a diploma in optometry). There is a newly established and well-functioning neonatal care unit, which is why retinopathy of prematurity detection and treatment will have to be developed. The hospital is having a record of 3000 surgeries done throughout a year within limited facilities. At present, the hospital with the support of CBM is in the planning of constructing a disability inclusive Eye Hospital at Fatima Hospital to widen its services to more people of the state and ensure quality in the services provided. It is a dream project of Fatima Hospital as CBM is wholeheartedly supporting us and in the course of time, this dream would be realized by the support of Almighty.
